Nitrogen Purge Systems Of Liquid Filling System

1. What is the Nitrogen Purge System

Nitrogen Purge Systems work with new or existing packaging lines. These systems work to replace oxygen in containers or container headspace to increase shelf life while preserving the flavor, texture and color of the product. Nitrogen purge systems are available for pre-fill, post-fill or pre-can purging.

2. Features of Nitrogen Purge System

Pre-Fill, Post-Fill or Pre-Cap Purge Handles a Variety of Container Shapes & Sizes
Conveyor Mounting Packaging or Portable Frame No Change Parts Necessary for Most Applications
Easy Set-Up, Operation and Adjustment Designed to Integrate with Existing Machinery
Tool-Free Adjustmen Robust Construction for 24/7 Performance

3. How does the Nitrogen Purge System Work?

Protect product freshness, taste, texture, and color with Nitrogen Purge Equipment.

Use nitrogen purge machinery between filling and capping to remove oxygen from containers, or container head space, in order to preserve the taste, color and texture of the packaged item. Purging oxygen from the head space of a container after filling can also extend shelf life for many different products by offering protection against oxidation.  While most nitrogen gas systems are conveyor mounted for use on an automatic packaging line, purging machines can be custom manufactured for unique packaging projects.

4. Case Study: Precision Filling and Dual Nitrogen Purging for Liquid Supplement Dropper Bottles

Application: Supplement ( Probiotic, Vitamin Drops, D3K2, Omega 3 Oil)

Filling Volume: 10ml, 15m, 20ml, 30ml

Container: Amber Glass Dropper Bottle with reducer and screw cap

Nitrogen Purge System: Before Filling Station and After Filling Station ( before Capping Close)

4.1 Project Overview

Shanghai Reliance Machinery developed a customized liquid filling and capping solution for nutritional supplements, including probiotics, vitamin drops, D3K2 formulations, and Omega-3 oils. The system handles 10 ml, 15 ml, 20 ml, and 30 ml amber glass dropper bottles equipped with reducer inserts and screw caps.

A key project requirement was to maintain consistent filling accuracy while minimizing oxygen exposure during packaging. To address this challenge, the machine integrates two nitrogen purging stations: one before filling to reduce oxygen inside empty bottles, and another after filling, immediately before capping, to reduce residual oxygen in the bottle headspace.

4.2 Engineering Solution: Accurate Dosing and Nitrogen Control

To maintain consistent filling volumes across multiple bottle sizes, the filling system uses adjustable dosing parameters and a controlled filling cycle. The filling volume is calibrated for each product format, while repeatability is verified through sample weighing or volumetric testing. Filling speed, liquid viscosity, nozzle positioning, and anti-drip performance are evaluated to minimize splashing, dripping, and dosing variation.

The dual nitrogen purging system provides additional protection for oxidation-sensitive formulations. Before filling, nitrogen is introduced into the empty amber glass bottles to displace part of the air. After filling, a second controlled nitrogen purge is applied to the headspace before the reducer insert and screw cap are secured. Nitrogen flow, purge duration, nozzle position, and timing are adjusted according to the bottle geometry and product characteristics.

The target residual oxygen concentration in the finished bottle headspace is 4%–6%, verified through headspace oxygen testing. This range serves as the project’s process-control target and should be confirmed through production trials and product stability studies.

4.3 Project Results and Benefits

The integrated solution supports flexible production of 10–30 ml liquid supplements while improving filling consistency and reducing oxygen exposure during packaging. By coordinating precise dosing, two-stage nitrogen purging, and prompt closure, the system helps manufacturers manage oxidation risks in sensitive liquid formulations.

For reliable production, filling accuracy and headspace oxygen are evaluated as separate control parameters. Final acceptance criteria are established using actual product samples, repeatability testing, residual oxygen measurements, and stability data under the intended storage conditions.

Shanghai Reliance Machinery provides customized liquid supplement filling and capping equipment designed around product properties, bottle formats, and process requirements.
